This Week In Bonners Ferry History

100 Years Ago

The B.F. Lumber Company’s annual drive started at Gateway, Montana on May 20 and today had reached Kootenai Falls. Thirty men are in charge of the drive which is estimated to be 12 million feet of logs in the river.

The B.F. baseball team went to Eureka on Decoration Day and played to a score of 9 to 9. The tie was not played off because the scorekeeper announced the score was 10-9 for Eureka and the error was not discovered till the B.F. boys had left the field. Members of the team say they had a pretty raw deal at Eureka and that the umpire was the best player for Eureka.

County Commissioner Fred G. Chambers reported on Saturday that both the ferries at Copeland broke loose on account of high water. The new ferry was caught some six miles below Copeland. The old ferry broke a cable while loaded with government horses. It is now tied to the bank just below Copeland. In the meantime, the county is maintaining a motorboat at Copeland and Porthill to accommodate people wishing to cross the Kootenai.

Jim Wommack participated in the “Golden West Grand Trapshoot.” After 6 days of competing, he was tied with 6 other shooters. The shoot off was won by a 16 year old from Canada.

Freddie Hatfield and Norm Lefebvre have been nominated for player and coach of the year in S.W. Washington. Freddie won the triple crown of amateur boxing in Seattle, Tacoma, and Portland. Norm has coached the Chehalis Eagles boxing teams to two unbeaten seasons after being the coach a Bonners Ferry for 7 years.

About 60 people attended the annual Bowlers Banquet at Freddie’s Café.

Man sentenced in Mud Bog shooting.

116th Cavalry Brigade of National Guard has been mobilized to take part in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The brigade includes about 25 soldiers headquartered in Bonners Ferry as well as many in Post Falls.

Seven environmental groups say forest plan doesn’t close enough roads.

Valley View teacher John Beck was named Idaho Phys. Ed Elementary Teacher of the Year.
