ST. MARIES — Holly Ansley scored nine of her 18 points in the first quarter as the visiting Badgers defeated the Lumberjacks 58-36 on Saturday in the nonleague season opener for both schools.

Baylee Blackmore added 14 points for 3A Bonners Ferry.

Freshman Taci Watkins scored 10 points to lead 2A St. Maries, which has just three returning players with varsity experience.

“We have a huge lack of experience,” said Kim O’Connor, making her debut as Lumberjacks’ head coach. “But I thought the girls did great. They played hard; ran the floor well. We missed a lot of shots, and they didn’t. We had a lot of turnovers in the first half, and we cut them in half in the second half.”

BONNERS FERRY — Katy Ryan took an inbounds pass from Darby McDevitt and hit a short jumper as time expired, lifting the Hawks past the host Badgers in a nonleague game.

“That was about the only thing that went how we drew it up in the second half,” said Lakeland coach Steve Seymour, whose team trailed by three points with 40 seconds remaining. “We had somewhat of a comfortable lead, ended up in foul trouble and they ended up getting some shots to fall against pressure. We got a steal with three seconds left, Darby made a great pass and Katy hit a big shot.”

Addisen Kiefer had 12 points and 11 rebounds, Ryan 13 points, three assists and four blocks, and Bailey Woempner seven points, five steals and three assists for Lakeland (1-1), which hosts Coeur d’Alene on Thursday.

Holly Ansley scored 14 points for Bonners Ferry (1-1), which hosts Wallace on Tuesday.
