Shook Twins return for Thanksgiving weekend show

| November 21, 2019 12:00 AM

BONNERS FERRY — Originally from Sandpoint and now making their music out of Portland, Ore., homegrown stars Katelin and Laurie Shook return home for Thanksgiving once again, and as they have for several years now, and the Shook Twins will be live on stage with John Craigie at the Pearl Theater Friday, Nov. 29, giving Bonners Ferry another reason to be thankful as we head into the holidays.

The show will wrap up the Shook Twins’ latest tour that began Nov 14 in Chico, Calif., and takes them up and down the Golden State before their return home for two “Giving Thanks” shows, Friday at the Pearl and Saturday, Nov. 30, at the Panida Theater in Sandpoint.

Katelyn and Laurie Shook were born in 1984 and grew up in Sandpoint. At a very young age, the sisters started singing, joining the choir in fifth grade, which they continued in high school. They developed their musical repertoire and talent throughout their teen years and subsequently enrolled at the University of Idaho at Moscow in 2002 to pursue radio/TV/digital media majors.

In 2004, they both took a year off from college and played their first paid gig at a restaurant. Soon after they secured a regular gig at a winery and established themselves as the “Shook Twins.”

The sisters played in and around Sandpoint and North Idaho, honing their eclectic indie folk-pop sound before releasing their first album, “You Can Have the Rest,” in 2008. Advancing their music career the sisters moved to Portland in December 2009, conceptualizing their 2011 release, “Window.”

In 2014, the duo was invited to audition individually for an appearance on American Idol.

“You said in your email invitation that, ‘You would have to audition us individually of course.’ It’s interesting that you assume that would be OK. Sure, ‘Of course’ we would abandon 10 years of hard work and career building as a duo to be the next new ‘Pop Star’ singing songs that we didn’t even write,” the fiercely proud and independent sisters wrote back.

Their latest album, “Some Good Lives,” released earlier this year, pays homage to everyone from a late grandpa and godfather to Bernie Sanders.

“We realized there was a theme,” Katelyn said. “Even though our minds are mostly on the women of today and wanting the monarchy to rise up, we have several men in our lives who have been such positive forces. We wanted to thank them and honor the good guys who showed us the beauty in this crazy world we live in. So, it’s an album for Some Good Lives that have crossed paths with ours — and to them, we are grateful.”

Laurie agrees, “It’s also an acknowledgment of our thankfulness of the good life that we get to live.”
