100 Years Ago

The County Commissioners have found it necessary to take steps to prevent large droves of cattle or sheep from being driven over the Kootenai River Bridge. Last week a large herd was taken across and ran most of the way, so the bridge was rocking and swaying in a threatening manner. In the future, a heavy penalty will be fined any person who allows more than 25 head at a time or who allows them to be driven faster than a walk.

Taxes are due earlier this year because of a ruling by the state legislature. The date also changed from the Saturday before the 1st Monday in January to the Saturday before the 4th Monday in December. This means taxes must be paid this year by Dec. 20.

J.B. Benedict, supervisor of the census, needs enumerators for the following districts in Boundary County: Meadow Creek, Bonners Ferry, Boulder and Lenia, Boundary and Continental, Copeland, and North Bonners Ferry. A flat rate of $6 per day will be paid.

John Stephenson, who operates Ball Creek Ranch in District 12, announced plans this week to establish an alfalfa and feed grain pellet plant.

Solutions to the Bypass stalemate are being studied.

“True Grit,” a film starring John Wayne, begins a 3 night run on Friday at the Rex Theatre. Glen Campbell, popular recording and television artist, makes his screen debut in the movie.

Mrs. Cora Sinclair of Bonners Ferry has been awarded a judgment against Great Northern Railroad in the death of her husband, Herman Sinclair. The judgment of $87,748 is believed to be the largest verdict ever handed down in northern Idaho.

A fire caused by faulty electrical wiring gutted an unoccupied Monroe St. house on Wednesday night. The fire came up from the basement, where a wire had shorted out.

The Boundary County Road Naming Committee is preparing a list of proposed names for county roads.
