Community helps the Moyie Shrine Club

BONNERS FERRY — The community stepped up again this year to support to the Moyie Shrine Club in its endeavors to raise money for the Spokane Shrine Hospital for Children. People supported the club by buying raffle tickets and purchasing food, popcorn, and ice cream at the Boundary County Fair.

“We had the popcorn booth at the fair forever. About 10 to 15 years ago, we decided to branch out and go into ice cream,” said Shrine member Richard Hollenbeck. “Then one of our members came up with the idea of adding a food booth serving brats and corn on the cob.”

After that, they added pulled pork to the menu, expanding the food even further.

“If it weren’t for our wives stepping up and helping us in the booth — the popcorn and ice cream — we would really be hurting,” said Hollenbeck.

Local businesses helped the fundraiser greatly by donating items for the raffle. Carter Country Farm and Feed donated a $50 gift card, Feist Creek Restaurant donated two $50 gift cards, Carquest Auto Parts donated a $100 gift card, and Les Schwab donated four $50 gift cards.

Papé Machinery donated a Stihl MS179 Chainsaw and Boundary Tractor donated a Stihl Leaf Blower. Columbia Bank, Mountain West Bank, and Pluid & Sons Logging, each donated two half hogs. Two half beef were donated by SugarPlum Floral and Foust, Inc. and Super 1 Foods donated a $400 food giveaway.

All of the money raised helps provide orthopedic care, including spinal corrections and athletic injuries, and burn care at no cost to patients and their families. Persons who know of a child who may need care can contact the Shrine Hospital in Spokane directly or contact any Moyie Shrine Club member.
