Elizabeth Anne Hight
Elizabeth Anne Hight passed away on Sept. 19, 2019, at Life Care of Sandpoint.
Services were held Oct. 19, 2019 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bonners Ferry, Idaho.
Beth was born in Anderson, Ind., to William and Margaret Hight. She was the youngest of 12 children.
At age seven she joined Walther League at Our Blessed Savior Lutheran Church in Alexandria, Ind. Thus began a lifelong commitment to Jesus Christ and the Lutheran Church. She was confirmed and baptized in the Alexandria Lutheran Church. As a young girl she worked in the church under the tutoring of Pastor Carl Luger and Pastor Roger Frobe.
At age 20 she got her teaching credentials and taught Headstart from 1967 to 1976. She enrolled in Concordia College in Milwaukee, Wis., in 1977, earning an associate’s degree in Theology and a bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences.
After graduating from Concordia College she returned to Alexandria and worked as the Education Coordinator and Missionary Training Instructor. She was instrumental in starting an emergency relief food program for Alexandria, which is still operating today.
Beth wanted to be a pastor, but at that time the Missouri Lutheran Church did not ordain women. Beth always loved older people so she got her CNA license and worked in the Alzheimer’s unit in the nursing home.
In 1995 she moved to Troy, Mont., and worked at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital in Libby, Mont. She moved to Bonners Ferry, Idaho in 1998 and worked at Boundary Hospital in the Alzheimer’s unit until she started work at Goodwill industries as the Mental Health specialist.
In 2009 Beth was diagnosed with dystonia, a debilitating disease that affected her muscle control and gave her constant pain. Beth continued her ministry from her wheelchair. Many came to her house for help, advice and always prayer. Beth lived in a tremendous amount of pain, but always when asked, “Are you having a bad day?” she would answer, “I never have a bad day, just some days that are harder than others and God’s grace is sufficient.”
