100 Years Ago

R. H. McCoy, Vice President of B.F. Lumber Co., stated that the night shift at the planing mill has been shut down due to fallen offers for timber in the past few weeks. Mr. McCoy states that in the future his company will not hire members of the I.W.W., wanting nothing to do with an organization that is determined to cripple production by failing to do anything like an honest day’s work. Mr. Hornby, manager of the Dover Mill, stated that a few years ago it was considered that an average lumberman should produce not less than 1,000 feet of lumber daily while now only 250 feet are produced per man and the wages have increased 100 percent.

Tuberculosis claims 150,000 lives a year and there are more than 1 million cases. An intensive national campaign is necessary to combat and prevent the disease. To fund this campaign, there will be a ten day sale of Red Cross seals beginning Dec. 1. It was pointed out that this disease kills more people per year than the U.S. lost in the war just ended.

The Lions Club is bringing Merlin, the Magician to town next week. It is said that Merlin’s mental powers are 100 years in advance of our times. Part of his act is reading the minds of people in the audience. He receives questions from people in the form of mental vibrations and then answers according to visions he sees in a crystal ball.

Merle Dinning, 19 year old son of Mr. & Mrs. Leighton Dinning, was lucky enough to receive a moose permit this year. He bagged a 1,000 pound, on the hoof, moose on Sunday.

Area residents were called upon today to participate in a straw ballot opinion on daylight savings time.

The city came closer to resolving its budget crunch with the acceptance of new health insurance for its employees.

Four youth who pleaded guilty to vandalizing heavy equipment in May will pay restitution and spend 2 years on probation.

The Bonners Ferry girls’ cross country team placed third at State. The boys’ team placed eighth.
