Badger cross country has been off and running for the last couple of weeks and the season is shaping up well for a team that is full of upperclassmen as well as many new faces.

In the first race of the season the Badgers traveled to Post Falls for a 2.78 mile race through Kiwanis Park. The course was very technical, full of turns, a single intersection used at least five different times in the race, and hills. Despite the opportunities to get lost, the Badgers stayed on track and posted some solid times.

The second race of the season took the Badgers to Farragut State Park for one of the largest races in North Idaho. Boise based teams Borah and Capital High made the trip north among other 4A and 5A schools. The course was a full 5K, the standard racing distance for Idaho high school races. The course also had a variety of hills and turns also making it quite technical. It was also the Badgers’ first glimpse at what will be the Idaho 3A District 1 Championship course.

Among the highlights for Bonners Ferry were the performances of Connor Alexander and Hunter Smith. Both were the first two Badgers across the line in each race. At Farragut they were only 10 seconds apart, running 18:38 and 18:48 respectively.

Another bright spot for the Badgers was newcomer Ceci Roemer, a freshman who has become an immediate varsity runner. Roemer finished in 24:28 at Farragut, the third Badger to score. Other notable freshmen included the additions of Taylor DeFalco and Matthew Donn to the varsity lineups at Farragut.

“We have a nice balance of young runners and more experienced runners. The addition of sixth grade cross country a few years ago has been a great asset to the high school program,” Assistant Coach Catherine DelSalle said.

The greatest highlight for the Badgers was senior Abigail Gorton. In both races Gorton ran well on tough courses. On the shorter Post Falls Course, Abby ran an 18:34, good for fourth place. The first three places all went to Post Falls runners. The next 3A runner didn’t arrive until Josie Yovichin from Coeur d’Alene Charter crossed at 11th place. In the 5K Farragut race packed with strong competition from across the state Gorton powered through for a 20:28 and seventh place overall. Yovickin was the next IML runner across at 22nd place. Gorton’s time at Farragut was also the fastest time in all of Idaho 3A by nearly a minute, according to stats posted on athletic.net.

“Abby is running at a high level early in the season,” head coach Tyler Warner said. “She’s put in a lot of work in the summer and has been tenacious in practice.”

Gorton is riding a wave of momentum from spring track where she set school records in the 1600m and the 3200m, claiming state championships in both.

The Badgers will next race at Hayden Canyon for the Coeur d’Alene Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14. Races begin at around 9 a.m.
