100 Years Ago

The Porthill ranch of Carl Neumayer has been sold to Mrs. Anna Blashfield of Havre, Montana for $15,000. Mrs. Blashfield comes here hoping the climate will benefit her rheumatic trouble. Her son, Maxie Jordon, who is a conductor on the Great Northern Railway, hopes to join her in the near future.

Porthill is to receive a new ferry. Since the high water last spring, the Porthill ferry has not been able to give adequate service. The county commissioners are calling for bids and hope to have the boat in operation within a short time.

H.E. Carlson, proprietor of the Gilt Top Cigar Store, has installed a soda fountain which he purchased from C.D. Simonds. This is the modern equipment needed for the handling of ice cream and soda water. He is keeping his former fixtures and will use them for serving soft drinks and draught beers.

50 Years Ago

Irene Glauner caught a King size Kamloops out of Lake Pend Oreille last Sunday. The fish’s dressed weight was 23 lbs. 4 oz. and was 35 inches long.

J.H. McNally has retired from his position as City Treasurer – a position he has held nearly 43 years. Warren Truesdell has been appointed to take his place.

Dawn Remington and Jim Copeland were chosen Fair Queen and King.

Governor Samuelson will be here on Monday for the “Take Government to the People” program.

A $1.5 million revenue bond election will be held Nov. 2 for mechanical upgrades to the Moyie Hydroelectric Plant.

The new high school is getting very close to completion.

The pedestrian underpass project has been delayed.

Barbara Rawlings of the Boundary County Community Theatre presented the school district a check for $2,000 as part of the group’s commitment to donate $5,000 for improvements to the Becker Auditorium at the new high school.

Greg Sprungl has been appointed interim sheriff.
