Games, food, cars ... and giant pizzas

PORTHILL — The Classic Car Show at Porthill has seen 10 years of vintage cars grace its streets with winners coming from both Idaho and Canada. This year the tradition continues on Saturday, Sept. 21, from noon to 6 p.m., with a few changes. There won’t be any registration fees for car owners and prizes will be awarded with a trophy and cash this year.

Porthill businesses were recently sold after a long tenure by the Sheppard family. New owners, Lars and Wendy Jacobson and family, have named their business Jake’s Landing at Porthill. As they point out, you can land by airplane, boat, or car at the top of the state.

Along with continuing the annual Classic Car Show, they wanted to add a twist by including a Customer Appreciation Day.

There will be free hot dogs and nachos, games, a jumper for kids, karaoke, a raffle, live music, and discounted food and sale items throughout the day.

Mike Kupper, new owner of Simple Simon Pizza, will be hosting his famous “Tame the Beast” pizza eating contest with a $500 cash prize going to the victors! There will be five teams of up to 20 people tagging in and out as they try to conquer the 29-inch gigantic size pie. As far as we know, nothing like this has ever been attempted at Porthill or Northern Idaho for that matter. It will be epic!

Also, don’t forget to bring your fishing pole. There’s nearly 300 yards of fishing on the banks of the Kootenai River as it flows into Canada. But remember, if you catch a White Sturgeon you can’t keep. If caught, it must be released. FYI, the record this year is seven feet long at Jake’s Landing. But who knows, you just might beat it?

“We wanted to say thank you to our wonderful customers. Creating a day to show our appreciation seemed like a natural thing to do. This is a day designed for the whole family to have fun,” said the new owners. “We are excited to be here at Porthill; it’s a beautiful, history-filled place. Our family wants to invite everyone to come and enjoy an afternoon of fun and games, Classic Cars, ‘Tame the Beast’ contest, food, etc.”

The new owners are looking forward to seeing you on Saturday, Sept. 21.
