Russell S. Hersrud

Russell S. Hersrud, age 78, was born May 27, 1941 in Aberdeen, S.D., to Earl E. Hersrud and Katherine (Winkel) Hersrud. He passed on Sept. 8, 2019, in Coeur d’Alene.

Russell grew up in Hettinger, N.D., and earned his bachelor’s degree at Dickinson State College and his master’s degree at the University of North Dakota. He was married to Jean M. Sorley on June 27, 1996.

He taught at Bismarck High School, Bismarck, N.D.; Cleethorpes, UK (teacher exchange program); Moorhead State University, Moorhead, Minn.; North Dakota State University, Fargo, N.D.; Oak Grove Lutheran High School, Fargo, N.D.; Rocky Mountain Academy, Bonners Ferry, Idaho; International Schools, Sfax, Tunisia; Echo Springs Transitional Studies, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Coeur d’Alene Project High School, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Oakwood High School, Morgan Hill, Calif., and Gonzaga University, Spokane, Wash.

His interests included tennis, fly fishing, music, photography, bicycling, hiking, reading, teaching, chess, travel, friends and family. He was an active member of the Kootenai Environmental Alliance, Audubon Society, Sons of Norway, and North Idaho Fly Casters.

He is survived by his wife, Jean M. Sorley; daughters, Shannon Gilbert and Stacy Bannerman; son and daughter in-law, Steven and Monique Hersrud; grandchildren, Keegan and Kennedy Hersrud; sisters, Mary Kate (Tracy) Leetun and Dodie (Steve) Egge; brother, Gene Hersrud; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
