BONNERS FERRY — Boundary County Middle School hosted Kellogg, Priest River, and Timberlake for the Bonners Ferry Cross Country Small Schools Invitational last Thursday, Sept. 19. The middle school athletes raced on the newly developed course which involved a start and finish on the Bonners Ferry High School track and 1.5 mile loop through the fields and woods behind BFHS. The course provided athletes with a range of hills, open space, and turns.

Thirty-five entrants raced in the girls’ race. Forty-four competed in the boys’ race. It was the Badgers’ first race of the season and their only meet at home. Both teams made strong showings, with the girls winning the meet and boys placing a close second behind Timberlake. Seventh grader Brooke Petesch was the individual girls’ champion with a time of 10:51. Makai Peak of Kellogg won the boys’ title with a 9:09. The girls swept their race with five Badgers in the Top Ten. Led by Petesch, Braylyn Bayer, Sydney Hinthorn, Lilly Krejci, and Sydney Beckle rounded out the Badger scoring five. In the boys’ race, Loren Huggins, Malachi Hubbard, and Kamen Nelson were a strong lead pack, followed by Trey Bateman and Wyatt Smith as scoring five.

The team as, a whole, performed well. Each member set personal goals to work toward during this first race and throughout the rest of the season. BCMS coaches Paul Bonnell and Kelly Hinthorn were pleased with the Badger performances. They are looking forward to the rest of the cross country season.
