Melvin John Morton of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, took his last breath at 1:23 a.m. on April 7, 2020. Miraculously, his last hours were spent not in the hospital, but surrounded by his family who recalled to him their fond memories and gratitude for who he is/was in their lives. The love in the room was thick.

Born in Shrewsbury, England, on Feb. 2, 1945, Melvin was the eldest child of Edna Bernard and Warren Morton. In death, he has now re-joined his parents, three younger sisters, and brother-in-law/best friend.

Melvin was a master of the phrase, “easy does it.” In that philosophy was the foundation of all that he did and loved. His quiet care and devotion to the idea of humility and appreciation for others, no matter who they were, or what they had done, was a prominent trait in him. “Howdy,” “This is the best meal I’ve ever had,” “We’re as sick as our secrets,” and “Thy will be done, not mine,” were some of his other most common phrases. When describing what he felt his own life was about, he said, “I am learning how to love.”

Melvin was a deep lover of the natural world, and found that big concept of a power greater than himself in his relationship with the woods. In his 20-plus years working as a scientist for the Forest Service, one of his many notable contributions was saving the White Pine from diseased extinction. His way of life will continue to be a teacher for those of us who knew him.

Melvin is survived by his deep friendships; loving extended family relationships throughout England and the United States; his 3 daughters, Susan Morton, Nora Pierce, Kelly Amos, and their families; his sons, Andy Quiroz and Bill Morton; and, his dearly beloved wife, Laura.
