BONNERS FERRY — On Saturday, March 21, the Kootenai River Inn Casino and Spa decided to close the doors to the casino in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since that time, management has kept the Springs Restaurant and Lounge open to “to-go” meals only.

While the casino and restaurant has been closed to public use, the Kootenai Tribal Leadership have been diligent in making sure that all employees have been receiving their wages and benefits.

“Currently all are employed,” said Tom Turpin, KRI general manager. “We obviously have limited staff due to the closure, but employees are rotating out shifts and things are working well.”

The current morale of the staff has been positive, Turpin said. Presently, the Kootenai River Inn and Casino employees have been busy getting ready to reopen operations.

“There is tremendous pride in our team, and we are currently taking time to polish up the facility so when we’re open, everything will be in tip top shape,” said Turpin. “We’ve repainted the restaurant, [are] shampooing carpets, cleaning machines, chairs, walls, [and] back of the house items like kitchen areas, etc.

“The team is doing an incredible job preparing for the re-opening soon,” he added.

In early April, the Kootenai River Inn and Casino, in conjunction with the Kootenai Tribe, have been active in the local community food needs.

“The Kootenai Tribe/Kootenai River Inn Casino and Spa donated nearly $2,400 in food from the Springs kitchen last week,” said Turpin. “Approximately $1,600 to the Restorium, and $800 to the local food bank.”

The original plan for a reopen had a date projected in early April, though a subsequent decision to remain closed was made on April 3. The new anticipated reopening for both the casino and restaurant is now May 1.
