Recreate safely in Idaho Panhandle National Forests

| April 23, 2020 1:00 AM

Sunny temperatures are increasing in North Idaho and recreation users are eager to get out onto their National Forest lands. The Idaho Panhandle National Forests are open to recreation, but please be prepared and recreate responsibly. All campgrounds, picnic grounds and toilet facilities at most developed recreation sites are typically closed until mid-May each year and are currently closed. Forest visitors are asked to pack in/pack out all that you bring.

Recreation opportunities include hiking, biking, and dispersed camping, however we encourage anyone considering venturing out to recognize social distancing and recreate responsibly. Dispersed camping means no services; such as trash removal, and little or no facilities; such as tables or fire pits, are provided.

As winter trails transition to a spring thaw, please remember to be gentle to trails systems during this time period. “While I encourage people to get outside and enjoy their public lands this weekend, please remember that with snow melting off and spring conditions, it could delay motorized public access into many areas and forest roads of the Idaho Panhandle National Forests. I ask you to help us by staying off roads and trails when they are too wet to travel on,” states Forest Supervisor Jeanne Higgins.

As you get out to enjoy your Idaho Panhandle National Forests, we want your experience to be memorable, fun and safe! Weather conditions can change quickly in North Idaho, so always plan for the worst conditions. Below are some friendly reminders to consider when planning your next adventure.

• Always take extra gear, clothes, food, and water! Especially in cold and snowy weather, be sure to layer up to stay warm!

• Pack it in, Pack it out. Help keep the Forest a clean and fun place for everyone to enjoy by packing out your garbage including dog waste!

• Seek trails with few people, leave plenty of space between you and other trail users

• Know the road and trail conditions before you head for the hills! Call your local Forest Service office to get the latest updates. For additional information, please visit our website: https://www.fs.usda.gov/ipnf/
