Badger cheer team announced
Bonners Ferry High School has announced the selection of the 2020 Badger cheer team following tryouts on June 23.
The squad was selected by community representatives and BFHS cheer alumni.
The BFHS Badger cheerleaders include seniors Kylie Underhill and Ember Allred, junior Bella Sims, sophomore Hailey Kelsey, and freshmen Addy Heigel, Kylie Callahan, Gena Kelsey and Kynsie Hinrichs.
The team is planning on hosting a second team tryout in October 2020 to recruit more students for the 2020-2021 basketball season and cheerleading competition season. Those interested can follow the BFHS Cheer Facebook page for dates and details @BonnersFerryHigh SchoolCheerTeam
“So far this summer, the team has been committed to conditioning and preparing for the upcoming school and sports season,” Andria Hedrick said of cheer squad members. “They hosted the first fundraiser at Columbia State Bank and earned $918 washing cars.”
The squad has another fundraiser planned for August with the annual Badger Coupon Cards. More information will be updated on the BFHS Cheer Facebook page for when the cards will be available for purchase.
Badger Coupon Cards are sold annually by the BFHS fall sports teams to raise monies for team expenses. The cards consist of coupons provided by local businesses in support of BFHS Athletics and with the card community members can save hundreds of dollars by using their card throughout the year.
The team also hosted their own summer camp at the Boundary County Fairgrounds with special guests and community members volunteering their time toward bettering the team, Hedrick said.
Special guests at the event included Iron Mikes Gym staff Robbie Fairchild and Amy Reeve, who lead a fitness routine and nutrition question-and-answer session by Boundary County School District nurse Karen Moore, who discussed health and hygiene and donated masks for the whole team in case they are needed.
Also taking part in the summer camp were cheer alumni Micheala Telford, Abby Eliassen, and Quinn Savage, who helped with cheers, choreography, stunting techniques; and Lexi Stockdale, who talked with the team about makeup sanitation and application. As well, the team also had a surprise visit from school resource officer, Dales Anderson.
“Camp was a wonderful experience and provided them an opportunity to practice in front of little future Badger cheerleaders that played at the park and then on the final day, they performed their routines in front of family and friends for their first team performance,” Hedrick said.
Hedrick said BFHS cheerleaders are excited to start the upcoming school and sports season. “They’re planning decorations for the sports and working on completing their 10 hours of community service required to earn their varsity cheer letter.”
