Ruth Locke Nelson

Ruth Locke Nelson left this earthly world and went into the arms of Jesus on Oct. 6, 2020.

She spent the last hours of her life in the Hospice House in Post Falls, Idaho, surrounded by her five children after assuring each of them that it was “okay,” and that she was ready to be received by Him. A celebration of her life will be held in the spring.

Ruth was a wandering adventurer of life's experiences, full of grit and determination to succeed and always giving of herself and her loving support to all along the way. Marrying young as a teenager, she began her adult life on her own with her new husband on the West Coast. Together they raised their five children, all the while, with steadfast commitment, she put herself through college and became a registered nurse.

With her RN credentials, Ruth spent the next 40 years providing patient care and case management. Along the way, she veered away from her nursing career for a very short time to try her hand in being a property realtor. Caring for others was in her blood and she quickly returned to the medical field.

Ruth enjoyed the beauty of the U.S, especially the mountains of the West, though she did bask in the warmth of Florida and the Bahamas during visits to her brother. She also lived on the Western Pacific island of Guam for a brief period. Her marriage and career allowed her to live in numerous cities and communities of Southern and Coastal Central California and Central and Western Washington before settling in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, in 2001, where she spent the remainder of her life.

Ruth was especially proud to have earned her private pilot license in the late 1970s and found majestic awe in flying over the Pacific Northwest mountains. Ruth found great joy in the beauty of plants and flowers. She was very talented in floral arrangements which she was able to exhibit in her church or simply on her kitchen table.

Ruth's love for her family and others was constantly being exhibited throughout her life. She was always providing guidance, love and advice or just “being there” for all. She loved all humankind, regardless of race, creed or cultures. Her last wishes were for us all to show love and caring for one another, keeping in contact as best as one can, to lend encouragement and a helping hand to both loved ones and strangers, to recognize the goodness and bond we all possess, and to bless the world and care for it.  

Ruth is survived by her sister, Geri Cottrell of Prescott Valley, Arizona; sons, Anthony Nufer (Linda) of Spokane Valley, Wash., and Robert Nufer (Veronica) of Yamhill, Ore.; daughters, Michele Houghtaling (Rob) of LaPine, Ore., and Denise Adams (Lou) and Suzanne Arbo of Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Nine grandchildren were proud to call her Grandma or Gramma, and eight great-grandchildren had her endless love.

Rest in peace and joy Ruth. The world is a better place because of you and Heaven is blessed to welcome you!
