Task force is an important part of community

| December 10, 2020 1:00 AM

As chairperson of the Boundary County Human Rights Task Force, I would like to respond to Mark Gundert’s letter to the editor.

We are pleased that you have read so many of the task force columns written by task force member Timothy Braatz, a college professor with a doctorate in U.S. history and peace studies and author of several books.

Since you confused us with our fellow task force to the south, let me introduce us. Our organization has been an important part of our community since 1986, when the Boundary County commissioners put out a call to local leaders, citizens, clergy, and law enforcement to form a human rights task force. Sheriff Ron Smith, now one of our city council members, was one of the original founding members. We are proud to continue the work today.

For several years, the mayors of Bonners Ferry have asked our group to appoint a liaison to represent our task force at the city council meetings and advocate on human rights issues. I am currently the task force advocate.

Boundary County residents have generously supported the Task Force for almost thirty-five years. We appreciate the opportunity to be included in our local newspaper and other regional publications. We thank the many people who take the time to read our columns and to offer positive feedback.

Thank you for your continued interest in our organization.
