Lady Badgers top Priest River, fall to Timberlake

The Bonners Ferry girls basketball team had three different results in Intermountain League play this past week: a loss, a win and a postponement.
Kellogg’s game at Bonners Ferry High School, scheduled for Tuesday night, Feb. 4, was postponed due to weather conditions and a major accident on U.S. 95. It was rescheduled for tonight, Feb. 6.
Last week, the Badgers lost 56-36 to visiting Timberlake on Thursday, and won 62-33 at Priest River on Saturday.
Bonners Ferry (8-10 overall, 2-3 IML) begins district tournament play on Monday at league champion Timberlake; the Badgers will be the No. 2 or No. 3 seed, depending on their result against Kellogg tonight. Priest River is the No. 4 seed.
Monday’s schedule has Priest River vs. Timberlake at 5:30 p.m., and Kellogg and Bonners Ferry squaring off at 7. The winners of those two games play for the district title and a berth in the state tournament at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12; the other two teams square off in a loser-out game at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. All games are at Timberlake High School.
The winner of Wednesday’s opener advances to a district runner-up game at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, which will be hosted by the higher-seeded team. The winner of that contest advances to a state play-in game on Feb. 15 at Fruitland High School.

Holly Ansley and Mia Blackmore combined to score 29 of the Badgers’ 37 first-half points. The duo made 12 of their first 13 field goal attempts, including five 3-pointers.
The rest of the Badgers also shot well, shooting 45 percent from the floor, including 8-of-16 from 3-point range. Emma Pinkerton filled up the stat sheet with 3 points, 3 assists, 5 steals and a team high 7 rebounds.

The visiting Tigers jumped out to a 24-10 first quarter lead, and things did not get any better for the Badgers as they failed to make a field goal in the second quarter.
The Badgers played better in the second half, outscoring the Tigers. Our halftime talk focused on competing and winning battles for the second half. The second half was much more competitive, but was not enough to overcome the Tigers.
Taryn Soumas and Brooke Jesson scored 31 of their 41 points in the first half for Timberlake (14-4, 5-0 IML), which went on to defeat Kellogg on Saturday to clinch the league title.
Sierra Hill led the Badgers with 14 points.
