Wrestling battles at tough North Idaho Rumble event
North Idaho Rumble
COEUR d’ALENE — Six Bonners Ferry wrestlers placed at the North Idaho Rumble tournament last weekend at Coeur d’Alene High School, leading the Badgers to a ninth-place finish at the 20-school event.
Featuring North Idaho schools from class 5A on down along with a few teams from southern Idaho and eastern Washington, the rumble is one of the toughest tournaments of the year, Bonners Ferry assistant coach Kevin Campbell said.
“Every school, from 5A to 2A in North Idaho is there, plus some of the top talent from southern Idaho makes the trip. It makes for a very competitive tournament,” Campbell said. “To have our kids competing, winning matches and placing here is a big deal as we get ready for districts and State. We are pretty pleased with how we did.”
Placing for the Badgers were Evan Barajas (126 pounds) and Andrew Sandelin (195), third; Eli Richards (160), fourth; Kyle Smith (152), fifth; and Jake Summerfield (106), sixth. In the girls division, Shaylynn Richards was second.
“The competition was tough as many of our wrestlers face state champions and/or state placers from the previous year in the 5A to 2A divisions in Idaho and Washington,” assistant coach Corey Richards added. “It was a good test to see where we were at as individuals and to see which direction we need to prepare for districts and State in the coming few weeks. All in all the wrestlers did extremely well.”
Prior to Friday and Saturday’s tournament in Coeur d’Alene, the Badgers traveled to Kellogg for a dual meet with American Falls, a 3A power from southern Idaho. Although Bonners Ferry lost 55-27, it was good preparation for upcoming district and state meets, Campbell said.
“Thursday night we wrestled American Falls, and to be honest, they beat us up a little. I think our kids were a bit surprised by how aggressive and physical they were,” Campbell said. “It was a good wake-up call to the team. After a pretty successful stretch in the season it is good this happens now. Now we can refocus as we push toward the end of the season.”
The American Falls wrestlers also competed in the North Idaho Rumble, and in several instances, matched up with the Badgers again — sometimes with different results.
“We even ran into a couple of American Falls kids from Thursday and this time we were ready,” Campbell said. “Kyle Smith flipped the result and ended up winning 12-6 over a kid he lost to on Thursday.”
Bonners Ferry hosts dual meets starting at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb 7, and then a tournament which begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8. Coaches encourage the community to come out and cheer for the Badgers as they compete this weekend and prepare for the postseason.
