Badger wrestlers place second with 5 champions at home event
BONNERS FERRY — The Badgers had five individual champions and placed second as a team behind class 4A powerhouse Lakeland at this past weekend’s Bonners Ferry Invitational tournament.
Jake Summerfield (106 pounds), Evan Barajas (126), Manuel Naccarato (145) and Andrew Sandelin (195) all won their championship matches by pin for Bonners Ferry, with 160-pounder Eli Richards claiming his weight class with an overtime decision.
Also placing for the Badgers were Nathaniel Varelman (182, second), Bryan Durette (145, third), Camille Usher (girls, third) and Marcus Regehr (126, fourth).
Saturday’s individual tournament was preceded by dual meets on Friday, a day that included a retirement presentation which honored head coch Conrad Garner.
“The kids came out and competed well Friday night. The kids all knew about Conrad’s retirement presentation (and Conrad didn’t), but they didn’t that distract them,” BFHS assistant coach Kevin Campbell said. “We wrestled some tough duals against some tough opponents. Even though we went 1-2 on the night in duals, we saw some good things as we move toward districts.
“Then Saturday was even better. We finished second behind Lakeland in team points, beating all of our conference rivals,” Campbell said. “Andrew Sandelin, Evan Barajas and Eli Richards all won big matches in the finals against kids they had lost to on Friday night — Evan and Andrew by fall, and Eli by fall in an exciting double overtime match. Jake Summerfield and Manuel Naccarato also won by fall in the finals.
“These kids are fighters. They never quit, and they just keep getting better.”
Bonners Ferry has its final varsity dual meet of the season at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Intermountain League rival Timberlake.
