Firefighters rescue U.S. flag in distress
BONNERS FERRY — The U.S. flag, blowing in the wind, is a grand symbol of our country, but when that flag is in distress, it is a call to action.
When law enforcement from the Bonners Ferry Police Department noticed that the flag at Wells Fargo Bank was hanging on by only one grommet at the top, they went to the bank to inform them of the situation.
According to Bonners Ferry Police Chief Brian Zimmerman, the people at Wells Fargo explained that the rope was broken and they were unable to lower the flag. They had a company coming out to fix the problem, but they would not be there for a day or two.
Bonners Ferry Police Sergeant Willie Cowell did not want to wait that long.
“Willie just couldn’t stand having that flag in such poor shape, in distress, so he gets a hold of David Winey at the fire department,” said Zimmerman.
The Bonners Ferry Fire Department responded with a ladder truck, climbed up to retrieve the distressed flag, then folded it properly.
“They took care of business,” said Zimmerman. “Kudos go out to David Winey and the Bonners Ferry Fire Department.”
