BONNERS FERRY — During an unusually crowded City Council meeting, former mayor David Sims stepped down to welcome Richard “Dick” Staples into the office of mayor on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

The public comments portion of the agenda included a heartfelt commentary of thanks to former Mayor Sims, and acknowledgment of the accomplishments that have been realized during Sims’ term.

After a very close mayoral race, where Staples won by a slim margin of two votes over Sims, and following a recount of votes to the Idaho Attorney General’s Office, Staples was confirmed as the winner of the election on Dec. 17.

The Tuesday evening swearing in ceremony was one of the bigger attended events that the Council has had the pleasure of witnessing. According to the statement written on the Council’s meeting agenda, attendance to City Council meetings is appreciated, and involved constituency are always welcome.

City Council meetings are conducted every first and third Tuesday of every month at the Bonners Ferry City Hall, 7232 Main St., at 6 p.m.
