BONNERS FERRY — The 2020-21 Distinguished Young Woman of Bonners Ferry is Lily Blackmore; the title given at the annual program held Saturday, June 27, at Becker Auditorium.

This year’s theme is “The Roarin’ Twenties,” which was reflected in dances and decorations similar to what you may have read in “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

The 1920s-themed event highlighted improvement for women’s rights and freedoms.

“They also wanted to change the view on women by proving they could do anything a man could do, which at the time, society did not expect for young women also to be doing,” said event host McKenzie MacDonald.

The event gave scholarships to participants in categories such as interview, talent, self-expression, scholastics, fitness, be your best self, and Spirit of Distinguished Young Women.

According to event organizers, “Lily [Blackmore] would like to attend college to pursue a degree in marine biology. She enjoys acting, singing, dancing, and her activities include soccer and pole vaulting.”

Blackmore has a deep love for the performing arts and enjoys singing; performing has always been a passion for her and she loves to test her limits.

In her talent performance, Blackmore sang a rendition of “Time to Say Goodbye” by Andrea Bocelli. The performance and talent categories allowed for Blackmore to receive around $4,000 in scholarships to the college of her choice.

“As a result, over the past 63 years, more than 740,000 young women have participated. Last year alone, more than $820 million in college scholarship were awarded to participants at the local, state, and national level.” said last year’s Distinguished Young Woman, Katie Summerfield.

“Now our participant chosen as tonight’s Distinguished Young Woman will go on to represent Bonners Ferry at the state competition, Oct. 2-3 in Idaho Falls. If she should win there, she will then represent Idaho, at the national competition next June,” MacDonald said.
