100 Years Ago

The Great Northern mail train No. 27, westbound, was wrecked Wednesday morning when it was struck by a landslide near Katka.

Some 86 cases of whiskey and other intoxicating liquors were turned over to Lewis William, Internal Revenue Collector. The whiskey, which is confiscated, is kept at the jail until Sheriff Dunning receives a court order to destroy it or to turn it over to federal officers.

A deal was concluded last Friday whereby the Lutheran Church purchased the C.L. Buck property east of town. They hope to secure a resident pastor in the near future.

A.H. Featherstone, owner of the Bonner Water & Light Co., advised the town board of trustees he would take $62,500 for his business. The City offered him $50,000.

The new high school gymnasium was the venue for the 1971 Junior Miss competition. Miss Linda Davidson, 1970’s Junior Miss, crowned Miss Becky Huggins at the climax of the evening’s program.

Georgia’s Gifts, a new gift shop and craft supply center owned by Georgia Collamer, opened its doors on the South Hill in Bonners Ferry. Gifts and crafts will be sold on a consignment basis.

Superintendent Richard Haworth and the school board approved the purchase of new band instruments. Band Director, Don Behm, was given the task of making a list of necessary instruments.

The Kootenai Tribe of Idaho has donated $10,000 to the Valley View PTO to buy playground equipment.

A hunter who had been lost almost 24 hours was discovered at about 4:45 p.m. Friday afternoon in Boundary County.

Boundary County Middle School has been recognized by the Idaho Board of Education for improving Idaho Standards Achievement Test performance by economically disadvantaged students by at least 10 percent in reading and math.
