In 1930, a brick building was built on the corner of Main and Kootenai streets for the Kootenai Valley Produce Company. Don Beatty purchased it in 1958, renaming it the Valley Grocery. Don remodeled the building in 1960, moving Don’s Café from the adjoining building.
After Don’s death in 1965, the café changed names several times; from Freddy’s Café & Lounge and Doug’s Litehouse, to finally in 1977 the Panhandle Café owned by Wes Dietz.
So set your watches, so we can meet for breakfast at the Panhandle Café.’ Look at the tasty items on the menu! If you really come down, we are now eating Mexican food. Yummy!
