BONNERS FERRY -- Over the past week, the Bonners Ferry High School athletics department has had to cancel or postpone all athletic events due to a case of COVID-19 on the girls’ soccer team and the poor air quality, which has ranged from “Hazardous” to “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.”

There has been no BFHS sporting event since Friday, Sep. 11 when the Badgers football team beat Kellogg High School 14-13.

On Monday, Sep. 14, the BFHS athletics department announced that there would be no athletic activities for the next two days, Sep. 14 and 15, due to a confirmed COVID-19 case in the district which was closing down the school for those days. The next day, the department announced that the entire girls’ soccer team was in quarantine due to a COVID-19 case on the team, and that there will be no girls’ soccer practices or games until Friday, Sep. 25.

The boys’ soccer game scheduled for Tuesday, Sep. 15 was canceled due to poor air quality from the wildfires raging in the northwest, and two days later on Thursday, Sep. 17, another boys’ soccer game and the junior varsity football game were canceled due to the still-lingering smoke in the air.

In total, four games were canceled the week of Sep. 14-18 and practices were unable to be held as well.

As of publication, the next scheduled varsity sporting event is the away girls’ volleyball match at 5:30 p.m. Friday evening. According to the BFHS athletics calendar, all scheduled events are currently still on as planned except for girls’ soccer games, which are canceled through Sep. 25.
