Badgers volleyball drops third straight match
BONNERS FERRY — The Bonners Ferry High School volleyball team dropped its third consecutive match Monday night, falling at home to Kellogg 3-1.
Despite a strong first set win in extra points, the Badgers (1-5) followed with three straight hard-fought set losses for their third lost match (26-24,17-25, 10-25, 21-25) in less than a week.
“We played extremely well against Kellogg,” said Bonners Ferry head coach Kendra Maas. “We had really nice blocks against their big hitter. All the girls played hard every point and made Kellogg work for their points.”
Bonners Ferry opened up strong, with senior outside hitter Reese Lane’s three kills and an ace powering the Badgers to a 26-24 extra points victory and a 1-0 lead in the match.
It was downhill from there for the Badgers, which, despite showing fight all night long and making Kellogg work for every one of its points, couldn’t pull out any more sets.
After Kellogg pulled out a 25-17 win in the second set to even the match up, the Wildcats made a rotation change that threw the Badgers off and proved to be the difference maker.
“The third game Kellogg had changed their rotations,” Maas said. “And we didn't adjust in time for that so we fell short and we missed some important serves.”
On the night, senior defensive specialist Lexie Maas led Bonners Ferry with 10 digs, while freshman outside hitter Asha Abubakari paced the Badgers with eight kills and added five digs and two aces.
The Bonners Ferry volleyball team will return to its home court on Thursday, Oct. 1 when it takes on Timberlake as part of the Volley for a Cure match to promote breast cancer awareness. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. and all spectators are encouraged to wear pink.
