Cub scouts on track with pinewood derby
BONNERS FERRY — Pack 114 Bonners Ferry Cub Scouts organized a pinewood derby race on April 17 with the older boy troop 114 involved in the fun.
Scoutmaster Tiffani Beggerly helped lead the annual event that featured multiple category races that included a turtle race, a race for the slowest of slow cars and a shark car race.
Beggerly stated a key aspect of these events is leadership building, and many of the older scouts act as role models and leaders for the younger scouts.
“We work out in the community and kinda learn how to be a better person and older boys as leaders to the cub scouts and prepares them for life later,” Beggerly emphasized.
Winners of the races received certificates, trophies and a $25 gift card from far north.
Covid has caused many disruptions for the troop’s meetings, events, and the VFW provided a place for meetings and came out to help judge the event.
The judges made up of veterans had to pick cars with award categories that include most scout spirit, judges choice, craftsmanship, independent and most futuristic car.
The pine derby race is one of many events planned by the cub scouts, Blue & Gold, which happens in January, was postponed because of COVID. Still, the plan, according to Beggerly is to celebrate the birthday of cub scouts, and all the scouts will make a cake, and different categorical awards will be given out.
The pine derby was a fundraiser event to help raise money for the pack as a whole, to be able to buy camping gear and supplies for the scouts’ summer activities.
The event will feature cakes for auction to help raise funds for the organization. There will be many events, but one of the events that many are excited about is summer camp.
According to Beggerly she’s excited for the crossover event when cub scouts join the troop as they get older and move up the ranks.
“We have a big celebration where they cross the bridge, and the troop accepts them into the troop,” Beggerly said.
The cub scouts have lower numbers this year, and they are still accepting scouts to join their troop and plan to be at the fairgrounds for the fair so that they can recruit interested kids.
The troop meets every Tuesday at the VFW building and welcomes all who are interested in participating.
To those interested in the cub scout organization, Beggerly enthusiastically said, “Come hang out and check it out first, ask questions and join in the fun before you have to commit.”
