Girl Badgers defeat Colville in overtime

BONNERS FERRY — The Bonners Ferry Badgers girls basketball defeated Colville in overtime, 47-45.

The Badgers played a strong first quarter, fighting back and forth against the Crimson Hawks. The Badgers had a five-point run to give Bonners Ferry a 9-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Colville struggled with their free throws in the second quarter and Badgers kept adding to their lead, closing the half with a 23-17 score.

However, after Kaylee Sumpter blocked a Colville shot down low, the Crimson Hawks answered with a 10-point run to put the Badgers down 30-27.

However, Asha Abubakari posted up in the key and scored four back-to-back possessions to give Badgers a 33-32 lead.

Colville tried to break away from the Badgers with a six-point run, bringing the score to 40-37. Abubakari scored another two points and Colville was one of two at the free throw line. In the last 30 seconds, Abubakari was sent to the line again, made both her free throws and sent the Badgers into overtime with the score tied at 41.

With four minutes on the clock in the extra period, Colville sent the Badgers to the free throw line. Badgers shot three out of eight at the line, but scored six points in overtime to claim the closely fought game.

Head coach Travis Hinthorn said that when Colville ran their half court trap in the third quarter, it shook up the Badgers. However, he added that players did better at helping the guards and not leaving them at half court.

Hinthorn said that overall the Badgers did better at moving the ball to get more looks to posts and said Abubakari’s high scoring percentage was a result of that ball movement.

Asha Abubakari had 28 points and made 12 of her 15 free throws. Mia Blackmore had seven points and shot five out eight of her free throws. Markynn Pluid had six points and Kaylee Sumpter had two points. Avery Bayer sank a three-pointer.

Saturday Nov. 27 Bonners Ferry v. Moscow final score 39-45.

The Badgers jumped out to a 5-0 lead early but trailed most of the game. The first quarter was a long eight minutes with the Badgers already shooting free throws. First quarter ended with the Badgers trailing 14-10. Free throw from Asha Abubakari and a three pointer from Mia Blackmore tied the game 16-16 in the second.

In the last 10 seconds of the half, Moscow pushed ahead to claim a slim 18-16 lead.

At the start of the third quarter, Abubakari tied the game 18-18 with two free throws.

However, the next few plays saw the Badgers turn the ball over five times and the Bears chipped slowly away to gain a 22-18 lead.

“Markynn [Pluid] had her best game and Kaylee made a lot of good things happen in the fourth quarter," said head coach Travis Hinthorn.

Hinthorn said the Badgers had a chance for the win when they were down by three with a minute left. However, the Bear’s Angela Lassen, who led Moscow with a team-high 19 points, made two free throws and a basket for Moscow to hold on for the win, 45-39.

Tuesday Nov. 23 Bonners Ferry fell to Sandpoint losing 50-34.

Coach Hinthorn said that the Badgers played a great first 15 minutes. The Badgers led 5-0 and kept the Bulldogs scoreless until halfway through the opening quarter. Sandpoint turned the ball over eight times in the first quarter.

After a 7-1 run Badgers lost momentum. Late in the first-half, Bonners Ferry scrapped against Sandpoint 17-16.

“We got tired and impatient trying to force [plays] and played faster than our skill,” he said.

Although the Badgers had a lot of steals, they ended up giving the ball back to the Bulldogs. He said the last minute of the first half set the tone for the third quarter and the Achilles heel of the team is going to be facing physical teams.

Asha Abubakari led Bonners Ferry with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
