Barajas wins title at North Idaho Rumble

COEUR d'ALENE - Bonners Ferry's wrestling team had one individual champion, three other finalists in their weight class and two more placers at the North Idaho Rumble tournament on Jan. 29 and 30 at Coeur d'Alene High School.

Defending 3A state champion Evan Barajas made quick work of his opponents in the 132-pound semifinals and finals on Saturday, pinning Caldwell's Gracin Go in 51 seconds in their semifinal matchup, then pinning Lakeland's Lucas Williams in 16 seconds in the championship match.

Badger wrestlers Marcus Regehr (138), Kyle Smith (160) and Eli Richards (170) all finished second in their weight classes. Bonners Ferry's Jackson Richter (220) placed third and Andrew Sandelin-Macintosh (195) placed fourth.

As a team, the Badgers finished sixth at the Rumble, which included teams from 2A through 5A enrollments.

The only 3A team to finish ahead of Bonners Ferry was American Falls, which finished second behind defending 5A state champion Post Falls.

American Falls arrived a day early in North Idaho and took part in a four-team dual meet with Bonners Ferry, Kellogg and Priest River on Thursday, Jan. 28, at Kellogg High School.

The Badgers fell 54-35 to American Falls, but topped the host Wildcats 44-39.

Double-winners for Bonners Ferry at the dual meet were Barajas (132), Smith (160), Richards (170), Richter (195) and Sandelin-Macintosh (220).

Also picking up wins for Bonners Ferry were Spencer Eby (145), Nathaniel Varelman (182) and Donald Riess (285).

The Badgers host the Conrad Garner Invitational this weekend, with action starting at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, and 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6.
