In 1936, Gig Shelman bought the Texaco station on the corner of Main and Kootenai streets from Lynn Kelly. He renamed the business “Gig’s Texaco.” Gig operated the business until 1944 when he sold it to his step-father Jean Florea. The business was renamed “Jean’s Texaco.” In 1946, Gig’s brother, Monk, bought half interest in Jean’s (Monk’s step-father) business; and they renamed it “Jean and Monk’s Texaco Service.” Monk bought out Jean in 1951, renaming the business “Monk’s Texaco Service.” Monk Shelman sold the service station in 1964 to open a real estate office.

Many matchbooks like this were handed out by “Jean and Monk’s Texaco Service.”
