Remembrance Ceremony for Fallen Law Enforcement Officers

BONNERS FERRY — On Friday, May 14 at 5 p.m. on the lawn in front of the sheriff’s office in downtown Bonners Ferry, the boundary county sheriff’s office and chaplain corps will host our local county Law Enforcement memorial observance.

Everyone is invited to attend to help honor fallen law enforcement officers by reflecting on their sacrifice and hearing the reading of the list of names of those who lost their lives in the line of duty last year.

The local ceremony echoes the national ceremony, and 34 annual candlelight vigil held a day earlier at the national mall in Washington D.C.

The county ceremony will feature our local honor guard, a memorial wreath presentation, a traditional last call, and, especially, the reading of the line of duty death list.

Included in this list will be the names of 128 officers who died in the line of duty in 2020. Also, for the first time, the list will be read in chronological order of death and will provide the cause of death.

Names of fallen officers are carved on the blue-gray walls of the national law enforcement officer’s monument each spring in conjunction with national police week.

After an extraordinary year of hostility toward law enforcement personnel, this ceremony will make it known that we, as a community, are among those who feel the hurt of the families and agencies who have lost loved ones and colleagues and that we stand behind the thin blue line with gratitude.

In the event of significant rainfall, the event will move across the street to the upstairs meeting hall in the city of Bonners Ferry fire station one.
