BONNERS FERRY — Want to make room for Thanksgiving dinner?

The 13th annual free Turkey Trot 5K/10K fun run returns for another family-friendly event this year on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 25.

“This event started as our ‘Second Helping’ run for the day,” said Caroyln Testa, race founder. “Now that we’re in our 13th year, it’s become a tradition for lots of individuals and families.”

The race had grown from 50 runners the first year to just over 200 last year, Testa said. The race and collect about five full food barrels for our local food bank.

The gun goes off promptly at 9 a.m. from the fairgrounds and leads runners down Riverside Road to the 5K turnaround past Mirror Lake Road. The 10K continues past the 5K turnaround and will be marked with cones. The water station is near the 5K turnaround.

“It’s a nice little out-and-back course, and Jim Cadnum has generously measured out both distances with his running wheel,” Testa said.

She said that without volunteers there wouldn’t be an annual Turkey Trot.

At the finish line there will be pumpkin pie, hot chocolate and coffee provided by Under the Sun. Along with prizes: from frozen turkeys, Indian corn arrangements, swag from Iron Mike’s Gym, Under the Sun, Dr. Hank Willis, Mountain West Bank and Cloud Eleven Mountain Farm.

Arrive early to get a prize number and play Turkey Trivia. There’ll be a burn barrel to keep participants warm. The run is still free with no registration, but it is timed.

“It’s a great way to earn your second piece of pie before 10 a.m.,” Testa said.

In the spirit of giving thanks, participants are asked to bring a non-perishable item of food for the local food bank. Contact with questions 208-290-7039.
