Badger football crushes Spartans Homecoming

PRIEST RIVER — Bonners Ferry football crushed Priest River last Friday 41-0, spoiling the Spartans’ Homecoming.
The Badgers took control early in the first quarter when Wilson Newell scored on a 35-yard run. Bonners Ferry missed the extra point and clung to a 6-0 lead.
On the following Priest River possession, Tully Reinhardt intercepted a pass, but the Badgers were unable to capitalize on the mistake.
After a short punt by the Spartans, Bonners Ferry took over at the Priest River 28-yard line. A few plays later, Newell scampered into the end zone from a yard out, and the Badgers grabbed a 13-0 advantage.
On the next Spartan drive, the Badgers got their second interception of the day when defensive back Walker Henslee stepped in front of a pass right before the end of the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, quarterback Black Rice sauntered into the end zone from 5 yards out and the Badgers took a 20-0 lead into halftime.
Priest River started the third quarter with the ball and defensive lineman Quinn Tucker stepped and forced the Spartans to punt.
Two possessions later, Eli Richards caught a 28-yard touchdown pass from Rice to add to the Badgers’ lead.
That score was the first of three for Bonners Ferry in the third quarter. Newell ran into the end zone from 39 yards out and with 2:29 left in the third quarter he scored his fourth touchdown of the night on a 45-yard pass from Rice to give the Badgers a decisive 41-0 advantage.
Rainy conditions and a wet ball made it a challenging fourth quarter for both teams as a number of penalties were called on both sides.
Newell finished with 262 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Rice was 6 of 12 for 83 yards and two touchdowns and Michael Bollschweiler led the team in tackles with 10, including six for loss. In the third quarter Teigan Banning made a circus catch.
The Badgers (4-3) host Intermountain League foe Timberlake Friday at 7 p.m.
