Girls soccer faces tough competition, continues working hard

BONNERS FERRY — Girls soccer faced a tough match against Timberlake, losing 5-3 but performed well in their matchup on Sept. 14 in a home conference game.

Both teams scored their goals in the second half but weren’t enough for the Badgers to overtake Timberlake.

On Sept. 11, the Badgers played a nonconference home game against Colville Indians and won 3-2.

Badgers scored a goal in the first half, and the Indians responded by scoring two goals in the second half; the Badgers were able to score two additional goals in the second half and overtook the Indians to win the game.

According to head coach Emily Winebark, the team has been working on touches, controlling traps and getting passing with triangles and getting depth in the game.

Previously, on Sept. 7, the Badgers played against Priest River Spartans and won 7-2. Badgers quickly scored against Priest River, logging seven goals in the first half. Spartans responded with two goals in the second half but weren’t enough to overcome the point deficit.

Besides the nine seniors, the rest of the team is young and needs more game experience to build on their confidence and aggressiveness, according to Winebark.

Winebark said, “We’re getting more confident in our one-touch quick give and go passes.”

Badgers have back to back away games coming up. The first match is an away conference game against St. Maries on Sept. 18. Then play against Couer d’Alene Charter on Sept. 20.

Finally, there is a home nonconference game against Riverside high school from Chattaroy, Washington, on Sept. 22.

“We just need to trust that we know what we’re doing and go for it,” Winebark said.
