Quality Education Petition Drive
BONNERS FERRY — Saturday, April 9, is the last opportunity for Boundary County voters to support the initiative for Quality Education Act by signing the petition.
If the petition reaches the 65,000 required signatures it will be on the November ballot.
According to Nancy Wycoff, organizer for the petition drive, Reclaim Idaho volunteers will gather signatures of registered voters in the Valley View neighborhood and in the parking lot of Trinity Lutheran Church Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
"We are optimistic that we soon will have enough signatures from each county statewide to get the initiative on the ballot this fall," Wycoff said. "Then, if it passes, about $300 million per year will go directly to K-12 public schools throughout Idaho."
The Quality Education Act will raise the funds by a slight increase in taxes on corporations and individuals making more than $250,000 per year, after deductions, and only on the portion made over that threshold. The new law prohibits any use of this money for administrative purposes, instead it will begin supplying those funds specifically for student and teachers’ needs in their classrooms in 2023.
KTVB7, a Boise news station has reported, “Under The Quality Education Act, any individual making more than $250,000 annually would have every dollar earned over $250,000 taxed at a 10.925% rate. The same 10.925% tax bracket would be created for married couples earning more than $500,000 annually. The Quality Education Act also looks to increase the state's corporate tax rate from 6% up to 8%.”
