Patron speaks out on re-running bond

BONNERS FERRY — A patron spoke out against the possible re-running of the school bond at the April 18, Boundary County School Board meeting.
Jeanine Betsher, a resident, said when she openly opposed the school bond on social media that she was “demonized” for not “standing for the kids.” She said many people afford an increase in taxes, especially due to the current inflation.
She asked the board to have compassion for seniors who are living on fixed incomes. Since BCSD is paying off one bond and proposing another, Betsher said there would be no tax relief or reprieve.
At the March meeting BCSD officials discussed starting a mailing campaign on the school bond in order to get information to voters. This was in part due to the lack of community input at low attended community bond presentations.
Betsher said that in response she would start a mailing campaign as well, but one that would be in opposition to the proposed bond.
A workshop on bond discussion will take place May 2 at 5:30 p.m. at the BCSD office, 7188 Oak St. The community is invited to give input and workshop the proposed bond with BCSD trustees.
Following the workshop, a special meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. for a potential decision by the BCSD regarding the proposed bond. Both meetings are open to the public. Special meetings are called as such due to their not being scheduled at the regular meeting times, which is typically the third Monday of the month.
