Debated materials developmentally inappropriate for children, teens

| August 18, 2022 1:00 AM

Parents are justifiably concerned about materials that are making its way into Idaho libraries and schools. Many of these materials deal with sexually graphic content that is developmentally inappropriate for minors.

Experts tell us that the human brain is not mature until sometime in the 20s. Because the brain’s frontal cortex, which helps us use reason and logic, develops later, young people are more likely to act impulsively and misread or misinterpret social cues or emotions. Adolescents are less likely to think before they act, pause to consider the consequences of their actions, or to change their dangerous or inappropriate behaviors.

Idaho Statute Title 18 prohibits the distribution of such materials to minors. It is for adults to make responsible decisions that keep these materials out of the hands of youth.

Framing this debate as a matter of free speech, free press or providing access to information is delusional. The current library director voted to join the American Library Association. This association has elected Emily Drabinski, a self-proclaimed Marxist, as its president. Marxists have no qualms about banning books and censoring information. Accusing their opponents of book burning and banning is laughable. Calling opponents religious fanatics and right-wing extremists, in order to reframe a debate, is a very old Marxist tactic indeed.
