Rickter leads Badger girls wrestlers to team title win
KELLOGG — Savannah Rickter (165G) won the tournament and led the Bonners Ferry girls wrestling team to a title win at the George Wild Wrestling Tournament over the weekend — during which every Badger girl medaled.
Badger girls wrestling faced off against 12 girl teams, took 10th in the tournament overall by scoring 87 points and finished 27 points ahead of the second-place girls team.
A junior, Rickter (165G) went 2-0 and won by fall over sophomore Sylvia Becker (1-1) in 46 seconds.
Bonners Ferry head wrestling coach Kevin Campbell said Rickter was a main contributor to the team’s success since she won the tournament and earned bonus points by winning her matches by pin.
Aubrey Wells (132-138G) went 2-1 and Gena Kelsey (145G) went 1-1, both taking second for the Badgers.
Lindsey Onstott (152G) went 3-1 and Nevaeh Therrian (100-107G) took third. Rylann Lewis took fourth (152G) losing to teammate Onstott.
Campbell said he was surprised at how far ahead the team was early in the tournament.
Prior to the tournament, Campbell said he was confident the girls would be in for the trophy hunt and when they sent three girls in the finals it was safe to say the girls had risen to the challenge.
Many other schools had about the same amount of girls wrestlers as the Badgers and the closer teams got to filling the 12 weight classes, the better chances of winning.
At last year's District I/II competition, the Badger girls took first leading second place Moscow by 10 points.
Four Badgers will compete at the Tri-State tournament Friday and Saturday in Coeur d’Alene at North Idaho College. The remainder of the program will compete at the Buzzy Lucy Tournament in Eureka, Mont.
