BONNERS FERRY — The Badgers placed second at the Conrad Garner Invitational with several wrestlers placing.

Placing first were Brandon Williams (98), Marcus Regehr (145), Eli Richards (182), Jackson Rickter (220), Savannah Rickter (G160-190). Donald “Donnie” Riess (285) came in second and Gena Kelsey (G145) came in third. Porter Blackmore(132), Joshua Pinkerton (190), Adelaide Heigel (G136-132) and Aubrey Wells (G160-190) came in fourth.

Marcus Regehr, in a match against Lakeland, nearly pinned his opponent in the first minutes, but the Hawk evaded Regehr and they moved on to the second round. Regehr was up 5-0, broke out of a hold and pinned his opponent within the next 50 seconds.

“It is nice to see the old Marcus back,” said head coach Kevin Campbell. “He has been fighting injuries all season and is going at it.”

Joshua Pinkerton went three tremendous rounds against his Lakeland opponent and won in an 8-5 decision after three rounds. Donald Riess took down his opponent in the first few seconds of the match and won by pin.

“Donnie Reiss had a breakout when he knocked out the No. 1 seed in the semis,” Campbell said.

Against Sandpoint, Bonners Ferry fortified in the lighter weight classes. Eli Richards was in control of his opponent working for a pin and throwing his opponent to wear him down. The referee warned Richards to be safe. The score was 5-1 and the match continued to the second round.

“Finish it, Eli,” Campbell said.

Richards gained two more points and pinned his opponent with six seconds remaining in the second round.

Campbell said that Richards goes to work and does what he is expected to do as state champion — win.

It was a special moment to have brother and sister Jackson and Savannah Rickter come in first at the invite, Cambell said.

“Jackson took his best step forward this year,” Campbell said. “This was Savannah's first time under the lights in the finals. Her reaction to winning said a lot.”

Savannah has won before but at the Conrad Garner Invitational, the girls matches were featured.

“You could see the excitement in the girls from other teams. They don’t get that attention at every invite,” he said. “Having Conrad Garner give out the awards was special. Many of these kids have wrestled under him since they were little.”

Garner coached Badger wrestling for 30 years and has been a beloved member of the wrestling community in Bonners Ferry, Campbell said.
