POST FALLS — On the first day of River City Duals on Friday, the Badgers went 2-0 before faltering on the second day, finishing 0-3 against three 5A schools. The Badgers finished eighth out of 24 teams.

In the first match, Bonners Ferry defeated Eureka 39-33 and, in its second match, beat Pasco, 42-33.

Head coach Kevin Campbell said that the first day was very good competition with a fun environment as the team stood behind their teammates cheering them on.

“Unfortunately, when you beat the first two teams you get put in the gold bracket,” Campbell said. “So we had to wrestle some of the best 5A teams in the state.”

Day two in the gold bracket saw 5A Post Falls beat the Badgers, 81-6, and 5A Thunder Ridge from Idaho Falls beat the Badgers, 45-34.

The final dual of the day pitted the Badgers against another top 5A school Meridian. The Badgers lost 51-36, and finished the tournament in eighth place.

Campbell said that the second day of wrestling was still a good day for individual wrestlers and that it was the first time in his coaching career to have to go to the gold bracket.

“Overall, I told the kids to hold their heads high. They competed with some of the best kids in the state and should be proud of how they battled,” he said. “It set us up for the IML this week.”

Today, Intermountain League duals at the high school begin at 4 p.m. with Bonners Ferry, Kellogg, Priest River and Timberlake set to wrestle each other to decide the conference champion.

Last year, the Badgers were favored to win, but now it is anyone’s game, Campbell said. He predicted that each dual of the night will be decided by 10 or less points.

“Anyone could win these duals. It could be that no team goes undefeated,” he said. “[Today] could be that way because wrestling is all about matchups.”

Unlike other years, the IML is even this year, he said. Priest River has its strength in the lower weight classes. The dual between Kellogg should be one to see since there will be forfeits due to not having enough wrestlers to fill the weight classes.
