Public Notice Habitat Restoration Activities on Deep Creek The Kootenai Tribe is implementing a habitat restoration project in collaboration with the Idaho Department of Lands on their Deep Creek Parcel adjacent to the Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge. The project is designed to create wetlands and provide off-channel juvenile rearing habitat for Burbot and Rainbow Trout. In addition, the project will enhance mainstem Deep Creek habitat for aquatic species including Burbot, Rainbow Trout, Kokanee, and Bull Trout. The project will restore approximately 2,200 linear feet of Deep Creek. Realignment of Deep Creek will restore riffles and pool sequences and deepen pools. Construction of streambank structures will provide instream cover, temporarily stabilize the stream banks, help maintain the pools, and add aquatic habitat complexity. Restoration of off-channel habitat, which will connect during the spring months, will provide juvenile rearing habitat and increase the exchange of nutrients needed to support the food web. Ten acres of riparian habitat will be revegetated with native plants and seeds. Invasive reed canarygrass will be removed, and fencing and browse protection installed. River access management includes fenced parking areas, interpretive signage, and footpaths to access the river. The project will also create a buffer from the Union Pacific Railroad. The parcel in question is directly south of the Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge on Lion's Den Road. Construction will begin in early July with some supplies and equipment arriving in late June. To ensure the safety of the public and the workers, the site will be gated and off-limits to public access through the rest of the summer and fall. For more information please contact: Shannon Ehlers, KRHRP Program Manager, Kootenai Tribe of Idaho, 208.267.3620. Legal#10885 AD#544765 July 7, 14, 2022
