Overdose incident reported at Post Falls High School

| June 2, 2022 3:21 PM

A Post Falls High School student was arrested Thursday and booked into juvenile detention after allegedly providing fentanyl pills to another student who overdosed at the school.

School resource and patrol officers responded to the high school after the Post Falls Police 911 center received a call around 9:40 a.m. that there was an unconscious student in the school’s weight room. Officers found the student barely breathing, according to a police department news release.

Officers recognized the student was exhibiting signs of an opioid overdose and administered their department issued Narcan to counteract any opioids in the student’s system. A short time later, Kootenai County Fire and Rescue arrived and continued to care for the student who was revived with an additional dose of Narcan. The student is expected to make a full recovery.

An investigation by the Post Falls school resource officer led to the identification of a student reportedly found in possession of fentanyl pills the student allegedly provided to the student who overdosed.

The investigation is still ongoing and more suspects may be identified, according to Post Falls police.

“Fake prescription pills are very prevalent in our area and have markings that make them look like prescription medication such as Oxycodone. Often these counterfeit pills are laced with a very powerful opioid such as fentanyl which can be deadly in very small doses,” said the police department’s news release. “The Post Falls Police Department urges parents to discuss the dangers of using narcotics that are purchased illegally. Below is a photo of a commonly found form of counterfeit pills.”
