Remembering Scroggie’s Service
BONNERS FERRY — On Memorial Day, Jesse Scroggie remembered those he served with during the Korean War.
Scroggie, who is selling numerous items around his property, wants to downsize his life. But like many veterans, he needs help.
He has three service numbers, one for each of the Army, Navy and Air Force. He said he kept volunteering.
“I always say God bless America,” he said with a smile.
Scroggie was drafted by the Navy and served in Korea for two years. Later, Scroggie went into the Army Reserve for eight years, went to college and National Guard and had double service, then he joined the Air Force guard. He has five discharges.
Scroggie has lived in the community for 50 years and has raised all his kids in Bonners Ferry.
In Boundary County, it is often said — and displayed by flags and memorabilia — of how proud the community is of its veterans. Local veterans officials said many of the aging veterans are at a point in their lives where they need support.
These people have helped so many for so many years but now they need help in practical ways, Bonners Ferry VFW No. 3622 officials said. Many are unable to cut and load their own firewood, or help around their homes with household maintenance, or help with grocery shopping.
