We need to wean ourselves from Washington money

I have been reading the back and forth about the snow plow and the funds used for the purchase. While good points have been made from both views, I haven't seen anyone ask, "why do we send the money to Washington, D.C., in the first place?"
When money leaves a community and makes its way to D.C., it is subject to inefficiency and corruption. By the time it comes back, it is pennies on the dollar. If we truly want strong communities where the will of the locals rule, we need to wean ourselves from the Washington teat.
