Public Invited to Contribute to Hazard Mitigation Plan via Opinion Survey

| March 21, 2022 4:30 PM

Residents of Boundary County are invited to participate in the update process of the All-Hazard Mitigation Plan by completing a brief survey. The questions aim to get a sense of the public’s perceptions of, and experiences with, the hazards and potential disasters that affect local communities. The online survey can be accessed via a special link that will be placed on the Boundary County website, or by visiting https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HZDHT5C.

Paper copies of the survey can be filled out and returned in Bonners Ferry at the Boundary County Courthouse, Boundary County Public Schools, Boundary Community Hospital, and at the Boundary County Library. Surveys will also be available at the Moyie Springs City Hall and store, and the Naples General Store. The Kootenai Tribe will also be sending surveys directly to their citizens via email.

The All-Hazard Mitigation Plan examines risks to our community posed by several kinds of hazards. The plan will define these hazards, consider potential impacts, and develop strategies to reduce those impacts. Boundary County, Bonners Ferry, Moyie Springs, and the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho are currently recognized as adopting jurisdictions and will also adopt this updated plan. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requires counties to update their plan every five years to remain eligible for federal hazard mitigation funding.

Community input plays a key role throughout the planning process. In addition to this survey, the public will have an opportunity to view and comment on a draft of the plan before it is submitted to the state and FEMA for approval. The current version of the Boundary County All-Hazard Mitigation Plan can be accessed and viewed upon request. This update project, including state and federal approval, is expected to be completed by December of 2022.

Questions can be addressed to Boundary County Emergency Management at (208) 290-5316 or via email at aoneel@boundarycountyid.org.
