Badgers get even with Wildcats winning 11-1
BONNERS FERRY — In the bottom of the fifth with bases loaded, zero outs, Badger baseball won by a walk to beat Kellogg in district play, 11-1.
The Badgers exploded in the second inning with eight runs, giving them a commanding lead to start the game.
Then in the bottom of the fifth, Bo Bateman hit a single followed by Trey Bateman, who doubled. The Wildcats intentionally walked Blake Rice. Teigan Banning also walked, advancing all runners and invoking the 10-run rule giving the Badgers the win.
David Hammons had a stand-out performance, going two-for-two at the plate and earning five RBIs.
Bo Bateman was two-for-three at the plate with two runs. Wilson Newell went one-for-one with three runs and a walk.
Banning pitched the win with five strikeouts, while only giving away one hit. Trey Bateman pitched two innings, noting one strikeout, three walks and no hits.
The last time Kellogg and Bonners Ferry met, the Wildcats walked away with two wins.
In order for the Badgers to take second in league, they had to beat Kellogg in the game.
“David [Hammons] came out last week with a hot bat,” said head coach Tom Turpin.
He said that the pitchers threw strikes and the Badgers put their tough defense to work and saw a strong offense. With their pitchers rested, Turpin said the team will be ready for Timberlake.
He said he wouldn’t expect less than a good game, just like the last time they met where the Badgers won 1-0.
It was a big break out in the second inning that made the difference, Turpin said, adding that big moments like that often take the momentum out from the other team.
