BONNERS FERRY —- Passing away didn’t stop one local man from making a difference and giving back to children battling cancer.

William “Bill” D. Powers, 72, recently passed and stipulated in his will that his estate be sold with the proceeds donated to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Susan Rice, Powers’ significant other and executor to his will, told the Herald that Powers wanted to donate his estate to children because he was fond of children and he too had battled with cancer. She wanted to make sure everything was handled the way he wanted it.

The Jones team at Coldwell Banker assisted with the purchase and sale of the estate, she said.

Rhonda Jones of the Jones Team told the Herald that a young local family, the Padillas, happily purchased the property. She added working with the buyer and seller has been a “dream transaction.”

Rice said once she saw the young kids she knew the house had gone to the perfect buyers.

Rhonda Jones added that it is not common to donate the proceeds of an estate. The Jones Team has dealt with other estate sales in the past year, but haven’t run it others wanting to donate to the proceedings of the estate sale.

In cooperation with Susan Rice, representative of the trust, Coldwell Banker North Woods Realty, and the Jones Team, the amount donated was approximately $183,000.

Rice added that Powers also stipulated that once she passes and the estate is sold, the proceeds will also be donated to a charity cause.

The Jones team thanked a list of businesses and individuals who helped the sale go smoothly:

Sharlene, Becca, Robin and Kayleen at Alliance Title and Escrow, Pam and Megan with Prime Lending, KG&T, Quintin at Bald Eagle Chimney, Bushnell Law Office, Kyle at KC Pest and Weed Control, Robert at Great Northwest Inspections and many others.

Founded in 1962, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is a pediatric treatment and research facility located in Memphis, Tennessee. It is a 501 designated nonprofit medical corporation which focuses on children's catastrophic diseases, particularly leukemia and other cancers.
