BONNERS FERRY — The Badgers beat the Timberlake Tigers in three sets on Tuesday during the Volley for a Cure volleyball fundraiser.

The Badgers took the lead in the first set, scoring off several aces. Helene Rae and Asha Abubakari had massive attacks racking up kills and points for the Badgers. Setter Emma Lucas made some sneaky plays by tricking the Tigers defense into thinking she was setting instead of going for a kill.

The Badges won the set 25-19 as well as the second set, this time 25-15.

The third set was a back-and-forth battle which saw the game frequently tied. After two long rallies, the Tigers earned a tie again making it 15-15.the badgers slowly pulled away after sinking two aces. Badger took the win 25-20 beating the Tigers in three sets.

Badgers are 10-7. Full player stats were not available at print deadline.

Bonners Ferry coach Cynthia Cummings said she was thankful for the community and their support for Volley for the Cure. Proceeds from the event benefit the Boundary County women’s cancer support group.

“That’s what tonight is all about, that's what we focus on,” she said.

“The girls played well. We still have sight on state. We are gonna finish out the season pushing hard at practice, giving it our all and moving on to the next game and looking to Sandpoint on Saturday,” she said.

The Badgers will play Timberlake next Thursday at Spirit Lake.

“Timberlake is in a building year, but we never know what to expect from them. I never take Timberlake for granted,” she said. “We are still going to play hard even next week, we still have to keep pushing.”

Cummings said, overall, everyone did their part, played well and had a positive attitude. The team is starting to gel together now.

Two weekends ago volleyball competed in the tournament in Spokane.

The tournament was a great humbling, learning experience for the team, Cummings said.

“We played higher classified teams in our pool. We had two losses and one win after pool play and were placed in the bronze bracket,” she said.

The Badgers lost in 2 sets to Orting and lost in the final set to Moses Lake.
